Research

The main research activity has been the micromagnetic modeling of spintronic devices (spin-torque nano-oscillators, spin-transfer-torque magnetic random access memory (STT-MRAM), microwave detectors) based on different magnetic materials, such as ferromagnets, antiferromagnets, ferrimagnets. Spintronics is an extremely vibrant area of research, development and applications. Nowadays, research in Spintronics is growing at unprecedented velocity driven by fundamental breakthroughs, advances in materials and device fabrication, development of CMOS manufacturing processes compatible with magnetic tunnel junctions – the building block of spintronic technology – by the major foundries (Samsung, Intel, IBM, Toshiba), and the launch of STT-MRAMs in the market. Riccardo Tomasello has particularly focused on the micromagnetic analysis of static and dynamic properties of magnetic solitons, such as skyrmions, vortices, and domain walls. Specifically, skyrmions – localized non-uniform magnetization configuration with non-trivial topology – promise unrivalled performance for a new generation of low-power devices because they can have a size of a few nanometers, are very stable, and electrically controllable.

The research on magnetic skyrmions -Skyrmionics- has exploded in the last decade with the proposal of new materials and device concepts, with intriguing functionalities ranging from memory to computing applications.

He was the Principal Investigator of the project Theoretical Understanding of static and dynamic properties of Skyrmions: towards a skyrmion based technology (ThunderSKY,  http://thundersky.iacm.forth.gr). The project received funding from the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (HFRI) and the General Secretariat for Research and Technology (GSRT), under grant agreement No 871, and from the European Investment Bank.
