Biography

Prof. Daniele Di Mascolo obtained his Master's Degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Calabria in Rende (CS) in September 2010. He then obtained his PhD in Biomedical Engineering and Computer Science from the Magna Graecia University of Catanzaro in April 2014, for which he conducted part of his studies at the Department of Translational Imaging, The Houston Methodist Research Institute, Houston, TX - USA. After obtaining his PhD, he began a postdoctoral fellowship at the Nanotechnology Laboratory for Precision Medicine at the Italian Institute of Technology to continue his research on drug delivery systems, becoming a researcher at the same institute in 2018 and, since 2022, at the Polytechnic University of Bari, in the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering (DEI).
The focus of his research activity is nanomedicine, understood as the development of innovative therapeutic systems, such as micro- and nanoparticles and local drug delivery systems, in order to optimize the pharmacological and/or adjuvant treatment of the immune system for diseases such as tumors, metabolic/immune diseases, and neurodevelopmental disorders.
Recently, he has begun to investigate the relationship between substrates with different topographies and cellular behavior, a central aspect of tissue engineering aimed at regenerative medicine, by studying the properties of various biomedical materials and the effect of subsequent surface modifications.
Finally, using nano- and micro-manufacturing techniques, such as optical lithography, electronics, and 3D printing, for the production of devices, he is pursuing the creation of 3D in vitro biological models for the validation of therapeutic strategies, including the analysis of the transport of molecules and particles to target sites in the blood, thanks to microfluidic approaches.
