PhD in Electrical and Information Engineering (DRIEI)
The three-year PhD Program in Electrical and Information Engineering (DRIEI) aims to train highly qualified researchers with advanced, multidisciplinary, and integrated scientific and technical expertise in cutting-edge sectors of Electrical and Information Engineering technologies. The PhD Program offers students the opportunity to conduct in-depth studies on sector-specific topics and participate in high-level research in Electrical and Information Engineering technologies, which include the following macro-research areas: “Electronics”, “Electromagnetic Fields”, “Telecommunications”, “Systems and Control Engineering”, “Information Systems”, “Electrical and Electronic Measurements”, “Electrotechnics”, “Converters, Electrical Machines, and Drives”, “Electrical Power Systems”, “Electronic and Computer Bioengineering”, “Numerical Analysis”.
The training of PhD students aims, on one hand, to strengthen their knowledge of fundamental physical-mathematical disciplines and deepen their understanding of subjects within the relevant scientific-disciplinary sectors, and on the other hand, to develop innovative theoretical and applied research topics in the field of Electrical and Information Engineering. These objectives are achieved through a comprehensive educational program comprising specific courses offered by the Doctoral School, periodic seminars delivered by Italian and/or foreign faculty, participation in doctoral schools, research and training periods at research institutions and/or foreign universities, and national and international workshops and conference activities.

PhD in Autonomous Systems (DAUSY)
The PhD Program in Autonomous Systems (DAUSY), accredited by the Ministry of University and Research in 2022, exemplifies excellence within the “Doctoral Programs of National Interest” established by Ministerial Decree 226/2021. With its administrative and coordination headquarters at Politecnico di Bari, it involves 37 Italian universities and research centers.
DAUSY aims to train experts capable of developing autonomous systems, i.e., technologies that can operate without direct human intervention, by acquiring and processing data and planning optimized actions to ensure efficiency, safety, and sustainability. Structured into three curricula – Automation, Smart Environment, and Monitoring and Security – the program combines fundamental systems engineering methodologies, such as modeling and control, with interdisciplinary expertise in robotics, artificial intelligence, and data science. Applications span sectors such as industry, mobility, logistics, energy, agriculture, environment, and biomedicine, addressing the needs of increasingly complex and diversified contexts.
DAUSY stands out for its strong connection with the industrial sector, fostering technology transfer and the integration of academic knowledge into concrete application scenarios. Thanks to collaborations with international universities and research centers, the training program is further enriched by professional growth opportunities and global perspectives.

PhD in Smart and Sustainable Industry
The Inter-university PhD Program in Smart and Sustainable Industry aims to train highly qualified experts capable of contributing to technological innovation, digital transformation, and sustainable development within key national and European production chains. PhD graduates acquire solid competencies in fundamental chemical-physical phenomena, complex engineering problems, and the numerical and empirical methodologies necessary for the analysis and implementation of tools. The program encompasses advanced technologies such as Big Data, Cloud Computing, industrial automation, robotics, sustainable energy systems, nanotechnologies, augmented reality, digital twins, blockchain, and human-centered artificial intelligence, while maintaining a strong focus on social, economic, and environmental sustainability. Each student follows a tailored training plan, balancing research and teaching activities, primarily during the first two years. The educational offering is divided into three levels (general interest, area-specific, and proposals from individual programs). The PhD program includes specialized seminars organized in collaboration with companies and research centers to delve into topics related to innovation, digital transformation, and sustainable industrial development.
Students are strongly encouraged to study at foreign universities or research centers of significant international prestige and to interact closely with the industrial sector. This interaction is crucial for a better understanding of technology transfer processes and essential for developing more robust training paths in this area. The PhD students trained in this program address the growing demand for technical professionals in key sectors such as aerospace, automotive, biomedicine, energy, IT, and smart cities.
