Biography

Domenico Buongiorno is a Type A Fixed-Term Researcher (RTDa) in Bioengineering at the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Bari.
He obtained his bachelor's and master's degrees (both with honors) in Automation Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Bari in 2011 and 2014, respectively. His degree theses, both supervised by Prof. Vitoantonio Bevilacqua, focused on machine learning-based optimization techniques for energy consumption optimization and human neuromusculoskeletal modeling, respectively.

In 2017, he obtained his PhD in Emerging Digital Technologies from the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa (PERCeptual RObotics – PERCRO research laboratory). His doctoral thesis dealt with the control of robotic interfaces for interaction with virtual environments, robot-assisted neurorehabilitation (EMG-based control – Myocontrol), and multi-degree-of-freedom (multi-DoF) bilateral teleoperation in emergency scenarios.
In 2017, he was a visiting PhD student at the Biorobotics Laboratory at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), under the supervision of Prof. David Reinkensmeyer.
In 2019, he received the National Bioengineering Group award for best doctoral thesis.

From November 2017 to July 2022, he was a research fellow, working in the fields of Electronic and Computer Bioengineering, Computer Science, and Applied Mechanics.
He has participated and continues to participate in numerous research projects funded at the regional, national, and international levels.

His research interests include robot-assisted surgery, biomedical data processing, explainable artificial intelligence (Explainable AI), human-machine interaction, and bioengineering.

In March 2019, he founded Apulian Bioengineering srl, a spin-off of the Polytechnic University of Bari.
