Biography
Stefano Mazzoleni is Associate Professor of Bioengineering at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the Polytechnic University of Bari (Italy) and at the IMT School for Advanced Studies in Lucca (Italy). He is an Affiliate Professor at the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa (Italy).
He is the scientific director of the Biomedical Robotics Laboratory (BIOROB) at the Polytechnic University of Bari.
He is the author of over 130 scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals and international conferences, principal investigator/scientific coordinator of numerous national and international research projects, and member of several editorial boards of international scientific journals in the fields of robotics, bioengineering, and rehabilitation.
His research interests include i) control algorithms for robotic systems, ii) biomechanics of movement, with a focus on the analysis of changes due to neurological pathologies, iii) design, development, and validation of robotic and mechatronic systems for rehabilitation and analysis of human motor control, iv) design, development, and validation of technological devices and models for functional assessment in neurorehabilitation, v) pre-processing and post-processing of physiological parameter data using biomedical applications, vi) multimodal data analysis (clinical outcome measures, kinematic measurements, physiological variables, etc.
He was a member of the Promotional Committee and the Technical-Scientific Committee of the National Consensus Conference on Rehabilitation Robotics (2018-2021). He is a member of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS), the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS), the Italian Society of Neurological Rehabilitation (SIRN), the National Bioengineering Group (GNB), the National Institute of Robotics and Intelligent Machines (I-RIM), and the Neurobioethics group of the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum.
He was co-chair of the IEEE/RAS Technical Committee on "Rehabilitation and Assistive Robotics" from 2012 to 2024. He is currently co-chair of the I-RIM "Rehabilitation Robotics" working group and the SIRN "Robotics and Technologies for Rehabilitation" working group.
In 2005, he received the "IEEE International Conference on Rehabilitation Robotics Student Travel Award" and in 2018, he received the "Entrepreneurial Innovation Award" promoted by the National Association of Young Innovators (ANGI) in the "Robotics" category.
He is a founding member of several academic startups in the field of robotics for neurorehabilitation, artificial intelligence, and biomedical technologies.
