Guidelines for the Approval of Student Applications Pertaining to Elective Courses and Individual Study Plans (ISP)

For each academic year, submission windows are provided during which students can request an ISP or elective courses to be included in their study path. The outcomes of the Student Applications evaluation will be announced within 30 days from the expiration of the submission window.

General Constraints for Submitting Student Applications

  • Only one ISP can be approved per calendar year. Elective courses, once approved, can only be replaced with a specific ISP. If an ISP is rejected, a new one may be submitted during the subsequent submission window.
  • An Individual Study Plan (ISP) request may be submitted if the student's career plan indicates courses still to be completed, for a total number of ECTS credits greater than or equal to 18.
  • Each ISP request must include a justification of at least 200 words, highlighting the coherence between the educational profile outlined in the ISP and the specific learning objectives of the student's degree program.
  • For ISP submission, students must present their career plan from Esse3.
  • The student must always attach the Course Syllabus for the disciplines requested, both for elective courses and for ISPs, to the application.
  • Requests for replacing a graded course with an educational activity assessed on a pass/fail basis cannot be approved.

Guidelines for ISP Approval

Elective Courses

All courses offered by DEI, as well as those of an economic/managerial, mathematical, physical, and chemical nature, are approvable as free elective courses, provided they belong to Scientific Disciplinary Sectors (SSDs) present in the academic regulations and do not significantly overlap in content with other disciplines already included in the student's study plan. For Master's degree programs, any disciplines chosen from the Bachelor's degree curriculum will only be approvable to address deficiencies in the educational plan. The justification must be included in the student's request.

Individual Study Plans (ISPs) – Replacement of Related and Supplementary Courses

Replacements of related or supplementary courses with courses from the same SSD, or from other SSDs, are approvable. Replacements may be accepted, in compliance with the academic regulations. If a course falls under both related and core categories, it may be replaced, provided that the chosen disciplines do not significantly overlap in content with other disciplines already present in the student's study plan.

Individual Study Plans (ISPs) – Replacement of Core Courses

In the case of degree programs with multiple curricula, core courses from a specific SSD within one curriculum (but not present in another) may be replaced with other core courses, even from different SSDs. If the total number of core ECTS credits removed from the same SSD does not exceed 6, the ISP request may be approved. Replacements of core courses included in common pathways should not be approved, as they are considered essential for the various curricula. Replacements may be accepted, in compliance with the academic regulations, provided that a core disciplinary sector is not entirely eliminated.

Please Note

Each rule in the aforementioned annex constitutes a guideline for the DEI Coordinator and the DEI Board. If the Coordinator believes that applying these rules could result in a student's study plan being inconsistent with the objectives of the educational path, the application under review must be rejected or reported and discussed by the Board. Applications not covered by the aforementioned rules must be examined on a case-by-case basis.

Possible Grounds for Rejecting an Application

  • Overlap of content with other disciplines already present in the student's study plan.
  • Lack of significant relevance within the scope of the educational plan under consideration.
  • Complete elimination of a core disciplinary sector.
  • Number of ECTS credits removed from the same core SSD exceeding 9.
