Electromagnetic fields – IINF-02/A

The IINF-02/A sector is committed to and intends to further develop research activities relevant to the engineering application of components, circuits, and systems in the radio frequency, microwave, millimeter wave, terahertz, near-infrared, and mid-infrared ranges. The various application sectors include telecommunications, industry, biomedicine, and space.

The main topics concern free and guided propagation; antennas; electromagnetic compatibility and metrology; microwave, photonic, and optical components, circuits, and systems; optical fibers and photonic crystal fibers in linear and nonlinear regimes; microwave and optical components based on two-dimensional materials such as graphene; electromagnetic diagnostics; interactions with artificial, nanostructured, and metamaterials; interactions with biological systems and biophotonics; sensors and transducers.

Main Research Areas

Below are the main lines of research that SSD researchers intend to develop. They cover various areas relevant to the applications of microwaves and optical technologies:

  • Antennas and beam forming for 5G and beyond systems and for satellite communications. Resonant cavities, microwave photonics; antenna arrays based on flexible and ultra-lightweight materials, applicators, and microwave systems for medicine.
  • Graphene photonics for space; Optical links for the integration of terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks;
  • Photonic crystals and metamaterials for telecommunications and sensing; dielectric and plasmonic nanoantennas for on-chip wireless optical communications; study of plasmonic and dielectric nanoantennas; non-reciprocal integrated optical components; study of magneto-plasmonic technology; Waveguides and resonant cavities in mesoscopic photonic crystals; Selective plasmonic tweezers for trapping nanoparticles;
  • Amplifiers and lasers in fiber optics and planar optics operating at mid-infrared wavelengths and for space applications
  • Defense systems based on electromagnetic technology
  • Physical Layer Security (PLS).
